Children in schools everywhere have a hard time focusing on
academics when they don’t feel safe, and bullying can happen in the
playground, hall, bathroom, or cafeteria. But even third and fourth
graders can take the steps they need to nip bullying in the bud
when they have the support of their families and entire school
behind them.
Once a school has made the decision to help students stop the
damaging effects of bullying and has crafted a plan for bullying
prevention (with the Steps to Respect Schoolwide
Implementation Support Kit), it’s time to start teaching Steps
to Respect skill lessons. In dynamic, interactive, media-rich
lessons, students learn to recognize, refuse, and report bullying;
how to be a responsible bystander; and how to make and keep
friends.
Teachers also guide class discussions and activities while
teaching thoughtful literature lessons based on popular children’s
novels by well-known authors. The lesson plans are built around the
themes raised by the books and integrate social-skills training
into core academic subjects.
